Gibbes seeking Southern applicants for $10K Factor Prize

Southern Factor

The Gibbes Museum of Art is seeking applicants for the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. The annual award, accompanied by a $10,000 cash prize, is given to artists whose work contributes to a new understanding of the South. The contest is open to artists in any medium, but they must have already produced a significant body of work or show considerable promise. They also must live, work, or have been born in the South.

“Unlike any other award of its type, the Factor Prize is designed to create an online archive of information about Southern artists that can be used by curators, collectors, academicians, and the public,” Marla Loftus, director of museum relations, says in a release. Past winners have included Radcliffe Bailey, Stephen Marc, and Jeff Whetstone.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 28. Entries can be made exclusively at factorprize.org. A review panel, made up of scholars, curators, collectors, and Gibbes staff, will choose the winner in March.
