Sushi is so popular these days, it’s getting its own event. The Get Your Roll On competition dives into the South Carolina Aquarium on Wednesday with a whole army of sushi restaurants ready to impress.
“We are doing this sushi competition so local restaurants can compete for the titles People’s Choice Award and the Critic’s Choice Award,” says event representative Beth Donehue. “The People’s Choice Award is obviously given by the people, whereas the Critic’s Choice Award is given by a panel of judges.”
“There are restaurants that serve sushi and people don’t know about them,” says Donehue. “Last year, Local’s Bar won the Critic’s Choice Award and no one even knew they offered sushi.” This year’s list of participating restaurants is extensive, with J. Paul’z, Tsunami (2011 People’s Choice Award winner), Golden Lion, Tobo Sushi, Ocean Room at Kiawah, Tasty Thai, and Local’s prepared to compete.
While the competition is still a few days away, we were able to get the scoop on a couple of the offerings. Tasty Thai will be serving the Great King Crunch, which consists of tempura shrimp and flakes, mango, and cream cheese — wrapped in a rice and seaweed roll — topped with crab and tuna salad, drizzled with teriyaki sauce.
The Ocean Room at Kiawah is bringing their Black Belly Roll, which has braised pork belly, chilled compressed peaches, pickled wasabi cream cheese, and chicarron — wrapped in black forbidden rice — with a garlic sweet soy reduction drizzled on top. General admission tickets are available in advance for $10 and allows you into the aquarium for the event. VIP passes are available in advance for $40 and includes express entrance, and complimentary sushi and drinks. If you do not purchase the VIP package, then tickets will be available for purchase which can then be exchanged for sushi. $1 gets you one ticket, and one ticket gets you one roll of sushi.
