George Duke brings smooth jazz and raw soul

The funky Duke of Keys plays the PAC in Oct.

Jazz/fusion keyboard legend George Duke and his combo will perform an eclectic set of old and new material at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on Fri. Oct. 15. Duke is touring in support of a new release titled Déjà Vu, which revisits some of the funk and soul of his earlier work. The collection features guest performances by trumpeter Nicholas Payton, flutist Hubert Laws, and saxophonist Bob Sheppard.

City Paper spoke with Duke this week. "Jazz has always been a sponge," he said. "Jazz musicians have always looked to other styles of music to use the elements they liked. That's what we did with fusion. Once it stops doing that, it will die." Look for the full interview soon.

Reserved seats for the show are on sale for $34 and $29 at the box office, Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (800) 745-3000, and online at ticketmaster.com.
