It wasn’t so long ago that painter Nathan Durfee was one of our Ones to Watch — now, his paintings hang in galleries across the country as well as private collections, and he’s got an avid following that snatches up most of the pieces in his shows before the door closes on opening night. Durfee’s last local show was during Piccolo Spoleto and followed the story of a lonely, musical dog named Bartholomeux. For this one, though, Durfee’s breaking out of the single-narrative structure. “This show definitely is a reaction to my Spoleto show in more ways than one,” he says. “Most of the work falls into diptychs — one painting shows the reality of the situation while the other is what’s happening beneath the surface, either in dreams or secret desires. Each diptych involves different characters, most them human.” There will also be a series of smaller ink and acrylic works on paper. “These allow me to take risks with small simple topics I wouldn’t normally put into a larger painting,” Durfee says. “Some of them are simple fun — smiling decapitated heads — but others evolved nicely and I’m going to explore some of them in the following months.”
