I know what you’re thinking, and no, the Fur Ball Royale is not a celebration of a controversial fashion statement — it’s a benefit for Pet Helpers, one of the foremost pet rescue groups in the state. Guests will enjoy dinner, an open bar, and casino games in the downtown Marriott’s Crystal Ballroom. Local news anchor Tom Crawford will host a live auction, with help from My News 2’s Tara Lynn and Miss Charleston Valarie Kobrovsky. There will also be a silent auction with prizes like dinner for eight at the Old City Jail or a Brett McKee-catered dinner for 10 at your home. “Unfortunately, in this economy, animals are often last on the list of charitable issues. However, it’s also the time when more animals are being surrendered by their owners,” says Lauren Lipsey, Pet Helpers’ public relations and outreach coordinator. The organization is a private nonprofit, relying solely on grants and public donations. “Shelters like Pet Helpers are critical to have in times like these. The Fur Ball is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and contributes much to our annual operating budget.” —Susan Cohen
