From Shark Week shenanigans to a birthday party in Awendaw, we traveled the roads for Scene 

Shark week

Thursday was a busy one. We got things started with refreshing adult beverages and snacks at Lowcountry Local First’s new co-working space on Meeting Street. The place was packed to the gills with artists, business people, Silicon Harbor bros, and the contractors that made the whole thing possible. Decorated with furniture donated by local craftsmen, the whole place has a bright, airy look that is a mainstay of cool offices everywhere. Though the company was unbeatable and Cru Catering’s food was spectacular as always (whoever thought of the deep-fried brie cheese ball, holler atcha girl), the best part of the evening was the showcase of local spirits from Virgil Kaine, Striped Pig, and High Wire. It was a little too crowded to dance, so we shuffled rhythmically to the best of our abilities.

Later that evening, in an effort to live every week like it is, in fact, Shark Week, we ventured to the S.C. Aquarium on Thursday evening (pre-Sharknado 2 viewing, of course) to gaze upon some of these predators from behind several feet of glass. We established our position at the top of the food chain by taunting the sharks with buttery lobster rolls, fried tilefish tacos, and fresh sushi, reminding them that we, too, could eat smaller fishes with our pointy teeth. A diverse crowd outfitted in their best Jaws-casual attire danced gamely to the musical stylings of both a great cover band (Moxie) and a local indie mainstay (Brave Baby). The aquarium’s resident bald eagle made an appearance, and we had a nice time, but we were a little disappointed when the sharks did not form a waterspout and ravage the Holy City. Now that would have been a finale.

The thing no one tells you about the Flats at Mixson is that it smells like Valencia oranges and pine trees. Add overcast skies, a slight breeze, and unseasonably cool 77 degree weather and you have the perfect outdoor yoga studio. Beth from the Yoga House in West Ashley brought her talents to North Charleston for a free, all-abilities class Saturday morning. The group ranged from first timers spending a lot of time in the child’s pose to leonine 20-year-olds executing asana after asana without ever straining in the slightest. After a long, long rest in savasana, we awoke to find that a small farmers market had been set up for us, and that hot coffee had appeared, courtesy of Mixson Market. We’re starting to think that the whole place is run by yuppie fairies who know the deepest desires of Mumford and Sons fans’ hearts. Needless to say, we’ll be back for the next pool-side yoga session.

If you’ve been to Two Boroughs Larder on Coming Street, you know about Walter, the corgi mix who is the apple of many a Charlestonian’s eye. You’d think no one could steal the show from him, but trot out a rescue goat named Hushpuppy mid cocktail hour and you’ll see some world-class charisma in action. Several dozen people gathered out at Deux Puces Farm in Awendaw Sunday to celebrate the third anniversary of TBL as well as the launch of Bittermilk’s fifth concoction, a charred grapefruit tonic. We aren’t going to try and aggravate your FOMO (ahem, that’s fear of missing out), but it was the best. Fuzzco brought an Airstream full of their wares, some seating, and a bear. The farmhouse was like a dream by Domino and Coastal Living’s love-child. We gorged ourselves on shrimp rolls and Clammer Dave’s shooters, washing it down with plentiful Red Stripe and rosé. A porchetta or two crackled away on the grill under the Two Boroughs team’s watchful eyes, and Cathead Vodka kept us all in our cups from midday to dusk. Because you can’t have a party without cake, Miss MariElena Raya rolled out a homemade grits-and-honey layered beauty topped with three sparklers for us to admire and consume. We were sad to see the night end, but it couldn’t have finished on a better note: a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” for TBL and a perfect Lowcountry sunset.
