Freeloaders: Tree families and spiritual cleansing

The week's best free events July 5-10

Another Fourth of July weekend in the books. But with ears still ringing from fireworks and a happy-birthday-America hangover, we can all be thankful this is a short week. Here are a handful of free events to help get you back on track.

Tuesday: After the weekend of family-induced stress, calm yourself with a walk through Olga Krimon’s Reflections exhibit at M Gallery. Using subtle reflections of light, the art installations will help take you to that happy place you were trying to find while your little cousin tried to strap firecrackers to your cat’s tail.

Wednesday: This week's hump day has a distinct family movie night feel. Eat dinner early, then take the kids out to one of two Lowcountry screenings. The Starlight Cinema series will be showing Toy Story 3, while the Terrace Theater continues its Family Film Series with Swiss Family Robinson

Thursday: The North Charleston City Gallery will host the Go For It! Tour. Indie rock band Rabbit! will be playing to raise awareness for arts and music funds-cutting in our schools. Those looking for ways to cut down on their air conditioning bill should check out the Home Energy Conservation Workshop sponsored by the Sustainability Institute. The program will show you how to make simple changes to your home that will greatly enhance its energy efficiency so your living room doesn't feel like an Arab bathhouse.

Friday: The Real Estate Studio hosts the opening reception for a new exhibit from photographer Gloria Penninger Welch. Stop by between 6 and 9 p.m. to see her Southern images.

Saturday: Contemporary Charleston 2011: Under the Radar Artist Lectures will host Melinda Mead and Conrad Guevara. Mead will be discussing the cathartic nature of her photography while Guevara will relay his ability to share humor through his mixed-media works. Keeping with the arts theme, Palmetto Fine Arts & Crafts will feature the work of Vordai in their July Show

Sunday: Start the week with calm light and end it with some spiritual cleansing at the Emanuel AME Church’s Emanuel Day Celebration. Right Reverend Preston Warren Williams II will be the guest speaker of the event that also includes praise dancers and choirs.
