Freeloaders: Shagging, Training Dragons, and Hypnotizing Babies

The week's best freebies August 20-26

MONDAY. Do you love local? Yeah you do. Head over to the James Island Community Markets to kick off the fall season. This is your last week to catch some free banjo and acoustics at AcousticMuffin. Later on, move your body to some alt-pop by Stop Light Observations. If that’s not your thing, move your body at Trudy’s School of Dance instead with some Shagging Lessons.

TUESDAY.  Heads and members of nonprofits alike will benefit from the appropriately named Building an Online Presence for Nonprofits. Get insight on your eyesight, or just score some free refreshments at a Free Lasik Screening. If you’ve got a bun in the oven, learn some useful information at Lowcountry Hypnobabies, which is, surprisingly, not about hypnotizing babies.

WEDNESDAY. So you’re done with endless information, and now you want entertainment. We hear you. The Big Gun Show will give you the opportunity to laugh at some premium stand-up. You don’t laugh, you say? Then hit up Starlight Cinemas before it’s gone for good next week.

THURSDAY. School kids aren’t the only ones who enjoy packed lunches. Ladies can attend the Brown Bag Lunch Series for female-specific presentations. We know you love jazz and electronica, but try not to get too caffeinated at Black Tap Coffee’s MundoVibe Weekly Listening Event.

FRIDAY. Do something constructive with your Friday night. Join in on the Etsy Craft Party, a global craft party initiative. Then bring the kids, or a non-judgmental date, to Movies at the Pier to watch How to Train Your Dragon.

SATURDAY. Monster Music and Movies is hosting their Charleston Record Expo, so stop by early for the best vinyl. Kids can stay occupied in the morning by learning about bees at Busy Bees, or dolphins at Smiley the Dolphin. Create your own app at the Hackathon, or hear harps at Sacred Harp Singing. If neither of those sound interesting, try the Artificialists' gallery show and DVD release party, hosted at a funeral home.

SUNDAY. Fight for your right to ovaries. One Woman, One Vote will outline various female leaders throughout history, and their struggles for equal rights. Then go home, relax, and get ready for another week of school.
