Freeloaders: Halloween week with spooks, surf, and a signing

This Week's Free Events

Monday. To get Halloween week started, the Recovery Room is holding a pumpkin-carving contest. Compete against other carvers for a chance to win spooktacular prizes while watching a scary movie. The Carving and frightening flick start at 7:30 p.m. and it is BYOP (bring your own pumpkin).

Tuesday. Just behind the South Windermere shopping center sits the West Ashley Library, and there you can find the Ghost Lady who will be telling scary stories. The stories are scary, but their origins lie in history. The Ghost Lady is licensed historical tour guide Karen Marr whose tales focus on the folklore and history of the Sea Islands.

Wednesday. The American Theater is hosting a showing of a brand new surf film entitled Who is J.O.B. The film features Red Bull team rider Jamie O’Brien, a super talented wave rider who is often thought to be on the pretentious side, but if you’re good, you’re good. Immediately following the showing is the fashion show HYDRATION 2011. Electric Friends will provide the beats until midnight.

Thursday. Local author John Brewton will be at Slightly Off Center to sign copies of his latest novel The Pope’s Gold, a romantic adventure of young Californian who inherits a rundown Italian vineyard that possesses a secret that will change his life.

The Weekend. For a full listing of Halloween events and parties please visit the Calendar+Scene section of the City Paper website. There are tons of parties without cover charges. And for the creative freeloader, lots of costume contests to win cash, bar tabs, and, for the starving freeloader, a meal for two at Vickery’s in Mt. Pleasant.

Saturday Standout. The communities of Cannonborough and Elliotborough are hosting a Halloween Pedestrian Parade and Fair for children and adults. The night starts with the pedestrian parade beginning at the Midtown development with the neighborhood stroll ending at Elliotborough Park, where the fair is taking place. There is a costume contest, pumpkin recipe bake sale and contest, live music, food booths, and games for all ages of goblins and ghouls.
