Freeloaders: Explosions in the sky

The week's best freebies, July 1-July7

Sure, there may be something big going on Thursday, but we've got your wallet friendly events for all week.

MONDAY Share your words and tunes at The East Bay Meeting House’s Monday Night Poetry and Music event. Bring a poem to read or bring your guitar to try out that new song you wrote. Jim Lundy hosts this event, which kicks off at 8 p.m.

TUESDAY Check out Deborah Sisco's exhibit Imagine on its opening night. Once you've gotten your visual creativity fix, hit up Kickin’ Chicken’s Mount Pleasant location for an Open Mic Night starting at 9 p.m.

WEDNESDAY Take the family out to the Grand Reopening of Folly Beach County Park. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and the park remains open until dark.

THURSDAY Take a moment from your celebrations and look to the sky for the Salute from the Shores air parade around 1:45 p.m.

If you don’t feel like putting up with afternoon beach traffic on the Fourth, head to North Charleston’s celebration at Riverfront Park for live music, food, and fun activities from 3-9 p.m. What’s the Independence Day without fireworks? Folly Beach will be setting fireworks off from 2nd Street East, and Summerville will have fireworks starting at 9 p.m. If you’re on Isle of Palms, set up your blankets and chairs by 14th Avenue for the closest seats. Sullivan’s Island will have fireworks in the town park.

Or, you can stay downtown, and watch the sky light up every which way. The easiest ones to see will be the fireworks at Patriot’s Point, which go off after sunset, and they’ll easy to see from any top floor of a parking garage.

FRIDAY You may need to take it easy today, so we suggest resting up all day for a nice art stroll and First Fridays on Broad.

SATURDAY Put on your shorts and a t-shirt and jog, bike, or, if you have to, drive to Hampton Park at 9 a.m. Louie’s Kids’ Saturday Morning Workouts will start your weekend off with an hour-and-a-half of exercise. Gather by the bridge over the duck-infested fountains and get ready to get fit.

After working on your fitness, test your willpower (or don't and just adopt) by going to Pet Helpers’ Adopt-a-Thon at Yuppie Puppy in Mount Pleasant. Meet the cats, dogs, and rabbits available for adoption and learn more about what you can do to help them find a home.  Jesse and Friends Music Studios in Mount Pleasant wants to hear your vibrato. Musicians and singers of all skill levels are welcome to come to their Open Jam from 6-8 p.m.

SUNDAY Get the laughs out of your system before Monday brings another un-funny week. Big Gun’s First Sunday open mic comedy show hosted by Dusty Slay begins at 9 p.m.
