Freeloaders: Can't Tax Free

The week's best freebies, Aug. 5-Aug. 11

On a money-saving kick after the tax free weekend? Keep it going with some of this week's free events.

MONDAY For gold members, St. Francis is hosting a free Get Healthy on a Budget seminar, which will teach attendees how to eat right for the right price.

TUESDAY For a free night at the opera, go see a showing of La Traviata at the Charleston County Public Library.

WEDNESDAY We know summer’s not quite over yet, but Waterfront Park in Mt. Pleasant is celebrating the beginning of the school year with inflatables at Splash Back to School.

Hear the next big beat poet or just check out some local art at the 827's Open Mic night.

THURSDAY Though drive-ins are basically nonexistent these days, dive-ins are becoming a thing around town. Loggerhead Bar & Grill features a family friendly Dive-In Movie at the pool through the month of August, so be sure to check out this freebie while it lasts.

Zombies will be gathering at Sparians for the rUNdead 5K Kick-Off Party, where registrants will have free access to a private room of live music and zombie punch.

FRIDAY You can celebrate all that money you’re going to save with your new-found knowledge of healthy, cheap meals from that healthy eating seminar earlier this week by going out to eat. It is Langdon’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, so there will be free champagne! But, there's still no such thing as a free lunch — or dinner in this case.

Get your chi in line before the weekend at Namaste Folly.

SATURDAY For an early morning and fishy afternoon, go see the Big Kahuna Fishing Tournament at the Folly Beach Pier. Let’s hope the rain stays away for a sunny day at the beach.

Before you head out in the UV rays, though, be sure to SPF it up and attend MUSC’s free Skin Screening at James Island County Park.

For all you upcoming authors out there, the Mt. Pleasant Library is hosting a free Writing Critique Group open to all 16 and up writers in town. It’s a great way to avoid your chances at skin cancer and be productive!

SUNDAY Argh, matey! Check out the First Annual Charleston Pirate Fest, which will feature a chance for a photo-op with Blackbeard and lots of buccaneer-themed events throughout the afternoon.

It's also Second Sunday, so stroll King Street, sip on some drinks, and eat some treats without having to look both ways before crossing the street.
