In our not-so-distant past, we turned to gladiatorial games for entertainment. We cheered as our favorite gladiators, armed with everything from blades to blind rage, fought to the death for their freedom. Now we watch Glee. But all is not lost. We may not have Russell Crowe wielding a sword and a lion mask, but we do have mixed martial arts and boxing. Conflict MMA and Palmetto Boxing Promotions present Fight Night at the Point. The Omar Shrine will host the mixed event that includes professional and amateur MMA and boxing. Two ranked MMA fighters will be in action as No. 1-ranked amateur light heavyweight William “Trey” Moss and No. 2-ranked professional light heavyweight Kelly Anundson will both have tough tests in the ring. Headlining the event will be local heavyweight Jeremy Stevens’ MMA battle and IBA welterweight champion Ayi Bruce’s boxing bout. A portion of the night’s proceeds will go to Crisis Ministries. We understand the irony in holding this event in a city called Mt. Pleasant, but we choose to ignore it. Sometimes you just need a bit more than unrealistically cheery high schoolers doing Lady Gaga covers to suppress your inner Roman.
