The 2010 Imagen Awards honored outstanding Latinos in the entertainment industry Sunday, and local composer Fernando Rivas was among the winners. The Disney Channel’s Handy Manny, for which Rivas composes the underscore, won for Best Children’s Programming. The show, which is about a Latino handyman and his mischievous tools, was up against the super-popular Dora the Explorer.
In addition, the Best On-Air Advertising award went to a Nickelodeon Hispanic Heritage Month commercial featuring Tito Puente, which Rivas also composed.
Rivas was unable to attend the awards ceremony, but Handy Manny’s producer/creator Rick Gitelson mentioned him in the acceptance speech.
