West Ashley residents and store owners are undeniably proud of their expanding fashion scene, as evidenced by the first Avondale Hair and Fashion Show at Voodoo on Saturday. With a glimpse of fashion "through the decades," local shops showcased their unique designs and selections at a runway show. Wink and Consigning Women provided the clothing and accessories, complemented by hairstyles by Strawberry Blonde Salon and jewelry from Eileen Carol Designs. The show hit most major fashion trends from the past century of style. Highlights included a grey flapper frock, a '40s-style bathing suit, a '60s mod shift dress, and an '80s Madonna-esque lace cocktail dress. Following the show, Consigning Women and Alchemy Coffee remained open late for a Boutique Walk. Alchemy hosted clothes from Wink (so patrons wouldn't have to brave crossing Highway 17) and local designers such as Bedlam, Fleur, and Sugar Me. Eileen Carol also had her original pieces available for sale. Zack Barrette, owner of Strawberry Blonde Salon and one of the organizers of the show, said the inspiration behind the event was a real passion for Avondale. "I really love this area more than anywhere else in Charleston, and I hope it's going to be hoppin' out here," Barrette said. "I wanted to help the girls and the businesses here."
