The Family Circle Cup, the world’s largest professional women-only tennis tournament, began back in 1973, the same year that women’s professional tennis went legit (that’s when Billie Jean King founded the Women’s Tennis Association, or WTA). The Cup has a proud history of helping put women’s tennis on the map, and this Saturday they’ll open their 40th annual tournament, bringing together many of the world’s best players to battle for one of the most coveted trophies in the WTA. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a substantial cash prize, too, totaling almost $800,000. Serena Williams won the whole shebang last year, and she’ll be participating again, along with champions like Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic, Sara Errani, and Samantha Stosur. It’s sure to be an action-packed tourney. And tennis isn’t the only activity going on during the tournament — there are also events like Family Day, a luncheon with top doubles players, a street party with live music, and more. There will also be a dress theme each night for spectators, including an Easter night for pastel lovers, a USC night for Gamecock fans, a military appreciation night for camo apparel, and a pink-out night for breast cancer awareness. Tickets come for single matches or in packages, and they get more expensive the closer you get to the finals.
