You might be unfamiliar with Educating Rita, the play that the Charleston Acting Studio chose to open its season — unless you’ve seen it performed before, or if you’ve watched the Michael Caine movie version. However, if you are still unacquainted with Willy Russell’s work, but you’ve at least seen My Fair Lady or Pretty Woman or know anything about Pygmalion, you’ll probably be OK. In Rita, the titular character is a young cockney hairdresser (Teralyn Tanner) who goes to college to better herself and ends up helping to better her alcoholic tutor Frank (Nat Jones). So there’s no hookers with a heart of gold or Audrey Hepburn-types, but you get the idea.
