Head bobbin' happy hour. Sweetgrass baskets and Saturday night miniskirts aside, the Early Bird Blues series is definitely the coolest thing going down on Market Street all year. Clock out and kick back to a handful of the Southeast's most badass blues singers and guitar slingers in the airy atmosphere of the Mad River Bar and Grille.

Red fish, blues fish. One day, it's your granddad's front porch blues band. The next evening, it's two young guns covering Captain Beefheart. Variety is the spice of the Early Bird series. The don't-miss show? The 78-year-old S.C. legend Drink Small returns to bless a few more lucky souls with his indelible, original blues spirit.

Get the blues, then go shake 'em off. Every show in this two-week series runs from 5-7 p.m. at centrally located Mad River. It's easy to catch a blues show and a drink, then still make it to dinner or another Spoleto concert or theater event that evening. Or just consider it an early night of entertainment and go home. Either way you're a winner — there's nothing mopey about these blues.
