If you’re a proud Irishman or woman — or you just want to rock out to some traditional Celtic tunes — Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones are the band for you. At the invitation of the S.C. Irish Historical Society, they’ll be filling the Charleston Music Hall with stories of Irish patriotism and history, all to the tune of traditional Irish folk ballads. An Ireland native, Warfield was one of the founders of the original Wolfe Tones, an Irish rebel music group formed in the early 1960s. He served as their front man until their split in 2001. The Young Wolfe Tones is the result of Warfield’s more recent commitment to traditional Irish music. He and four young musicians, who are also Irish traditionalists, present the same historic, patriotic Irish music that Warfield has always been passionate about. “While other formerly Irish musicians sought other endeavors and styles, Derek Warfield stayed true to what we love — traditional Irish music,” says S. C. Irish Historical Society President Gary White. “The Young Wolfe Tones is committed to performing the music as it was developed in Ireland.” What better way to kick off your St. Patty’s Day celebrations?
