Charleston celebrates the latest major motion picture filmed here with the national premiere of Dear John. Based on the novel by North Carolina author Nicholas Sparks, the romantic tear-jerker tells the story of John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a soldier, and Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), a college student. They fall in love over spring break, and when he returns to duty they take on a long distance relationship. Can their love withstand the miles, John’s dangerous deployments, and Savannah’s flirtations with other guys? You’ll find out when you watch the film in the Hippodrome Theatre.
After the show, guests will head next door to the S.C. Aquarium for a glam after-party where they’ll rub elbows with the film’s stars, including Tatum, Seyfried, and Braeden Reed, last week’s City Paper cover boy. Cru Catering is providing innovative hors d’oeuvres and desserts along with specialty cocktails, and DJ Moo Moo will be spinning beats. A silent auction will include goodies like an autographed script. Guests will also receive a collectors item ticket and gift bag.
Though some might balk at the $250 ticket price, you can rest assured that tickets are tax deductible, and proceeds go to benefit Carolina Autism. Don’t want to shell out the cash? You can still show up and gawk at the stars on the red carpet around 6 p.m. —Erica Jackson
