Singer-guitarist Davis Coen spends most of his time playing traditional styles of blues on the road these days. Formerly based in Charleston, he recently settled in the Memphis area, which allows him easy access to the little towns and classic music venues of the Mississippi Delta region. “It’s been the busiest domestic touring year of my career this year,” says Coen. “Since the economy has continued to worsen for musicians, I’ve mostly discontinued playing with the usual drum-kit-and-bass accompaniment. I’ve been doing more acoustic solo and duo shows. As usual, I incorporate a bunch of traditional country-blues and Piedmont Carolina style, mixed with Delta, Hill-country, and a bit of New Orleans staples in my sets.” He recently released a studio album titled Blue Lights for Yours and Mine. He returned to the Lowcountry for a series of shows this week.
