CofC hosts One Billion Rising event

Students, community members to take stand against violence against women

This Valentine’s Day, several Charleston organizations are joining forces to mobilize to end violence against women and girls worldwide. The Sophia Institute, the College of Charleston, My Sister's House, People Against Rape, Spirit Moves and other organizations are hosting a One Billion Rising event in Charleston, part of a worldwide demonstration of solidarity.

Participants will meet at the Cistern at College of Charleston Thurs. Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m. and walk over to the Ravenel/Cooper River Bridge by 4:30 p.m. and line the bridge, arm in arm, singing, dancing, and taking a stand against violence. Afterward, the dancing will continue at Spirit Moves at 6 p.m. Many will also be attending The Vagina Monologues at 7:30 p.m. or 12 a.m. at the College of Charleston.

Organizers are requesting that participants wear a bright shirt, scarf, carry a banner, a flag, or bring an instrument to show Charleston the collective strength of the One Billion Rising Movement. For more information visit
