City to Buy Fire Site

The City of Charleston will buy the site of the Sofa Super Store fire to memorialize the nine firefighters who lost their lives battling the blaze, said Mayor Joe Riley.

"The land is sacred," Riley said. "It was where nine people died and it will forever be preserved."

The mayor has contacted the owner of the two and a half acre site to let him know the city's intentions. No assurances were made, but the mayor was confident that the city will own the property.

"One way or another, we will see that it is acquired," Riley said.

No cost has been determined for the property and no plans have been laid out for what the site will look like, but Riley said he would like to see a small park with a memorial commemorating the names of those lost. He also suggested that a county park planned for the West Ashley area should serve as a larger memorial.

"The community wants to remember these nine fallen heroes and to memorialize them," he said. —Greg Hambrick
