City Market $5 mil rehab (including sketches) 

Work on sheds begins in January

Standing for more than 150 years, the City Market will get a $5 million rehab in 2010. The City of Charleston and the market’s management team (led by city hospitality leaders Hank Holliday and Steve Varn) unveiled the plan Tuesday.

“What the market management team has created is a wonderful, exciting restoration of an important landmark in the city,” said Mayor Joe Riley.

The first phase of work on the sheds will begin in January, including roof improvements, a fresh coat of paint, brick repairs, new fans, and completely upgraded electrical wiring. Displaced booth owners will be set up in temporary tents on the south end of Market Street.

Stores in the front shed are part of a second phase of the rehab, planned for late 2010. The cost will be repaid through booth rentals.
