Revered throughout the world both for their finely crafted marionettes and astonishing skill in manipulating them, the Colla Marionette Company returns to Charleston. Elegantly costumed and charmingly staged, the classic fairy tale is lovingly brought to life by a cast of over 150 marionettes. Sponsored by Sherman Capital Markets, LLC and presented by Spoleto Festival USA. Approximately one hour 30 minutes.

Cinderella has never had two wicked step-puppets before
Colla Marionette Company brings its enchanting rendition of Cinderella to Charleston. The fairy tale is told with a cast of more than 150 marionettes, each skillfully carved by hand, majestically costumed, and crowned with a wig of human hair. Ornately painted paper sets create a convincing backdrop before which the classic story unfolds.

Strings attached
Cinderella features a mixture of actor marionettes and dancer marionettes, all of which are manipulated by strings from above. The difference? Dancer marionettes "have slightly different kinds of movement, especially in the legs," says Pierro Corbella, Colla's general manager, adding "They're mostly the same, but they must move in a little bit different way for balance." The simplest movements are realized with just eight strings, but the more complex movement the marionette performs, the more strings are used.

Not just for kids
Corbella emphasizes that marionettes are sophisticated entertainment for adults, too. "People in Italy and everywhere think marionettes are for children and babies and do not make interesting theater for adults. Marionettes are for everyone. The tradition of the marionette in Italy especially was a tradition for adults, not for children."
