For those of you who slept through history class, Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Since May 5 falls on a weekday, Charleston is celebrating a little early Saturday. Locals can get together and partake in the rich local Hispanic culture through traditional cuisine, dance, music, margaritas, and cervezas (that’s beer). Entertainment includes the Latin Groove Kids dancers and professional salsa dancers, and music from Colombian-born DJ Luigi of Latin Groove, Orquesta Mayor, and (R)evolution: Genesis. Guests will also have the opportunity to sign up for the salsa dance competition. Pros and amateurs alike are invited to participate, and the winner gets $200. A portion of the proceeds from the festival will benefit Roper St. Francis. —Christina Janke
