On your mark, get set, paddle — and stand up. The Chucktown Showdown celebrates the sport of stand-up paddleboarding with a day of races. Event organizer Joey McQuaid says he’s excited “to bring an extremely competitive sanctioned race to Charleston.” He’s also trying to get stand-up paddleboarding to be a sanctioned Special Olympics event and is raising money for the Special Olympics at the event. There will be three separate races: the four-mile rec race, the eight-mile elite race, and the Kids SUP race. Pick up your race packet and scope out the competition on Friday at the Marriott rooftop bar — but don’t imbibe too much as you’ll want to be fresh and ready for the pre-race meeting on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. When asked about any surprises, McQuaid was pretty straightforward. “The only surprise may be the weather. We’re hoping for the best,” he says.
