A longtime local institution for Sunday brunch, the former Bookstore Café moved from its downtown corner to Mt. Pleasant and changed its name, but the food is as good as ever. The breakfast potato casseroles, named for local islands, are loaded with everything from turkey and bacon to black beans and banana peppers and always plenty of cheese. Menu regulars like cranberry bread French toast and Southern Benedict (with fried green tomatoes and bacon) offer delightful twists on traditional breakfast fare. The selection of salads and sandwiches at lunch are similarly inventive and help cement Charleston’s Café stature as an enduring favorite. —Robert Moss
