Charleston Stage's SummerStage presents Willy Wonka Jr.

The kids' camp will culminate with the live performance

When I was but a young brace-faced child, I would return from camp with little to show for it. After three weeks in the mountains, I might have some crappy arts and crafts to give mom, a bruise from knocking foreheads during a failed first kiss, and a weird rash on my elbow. The kids of Charleston Stage’s SummerStage Musical Theatre Camp will have a lot more to show for their three week camp experience.

More than 60 of the program’s students, ranging in age from kindergarten to high school, will perform Willy Wonka Jr. at the Dock Street Theatre. The Leslie Bricusse and Timothy McDonald adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stays true to the story of creepily eccentric candy man Willy Wonka and his search for an heir to his sugary throne.

With music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the production will also include Wonka classics, "The Candy Man" "I've Got a Golden Ticket" "Oompa Loompa," and "I Want it Now.”

The show marks the opening of sales for 2011-12 Charleston Stage season tickets.
