Part of Piccolo Spoleto's Choral Artist Series. The CSU Concert Singers and the Summerville Singers present another special “town and gown” program entitled How Sweet the Music featuring Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with a chamber orchestra and Mack Wilberg’s "Three Scottish Folk Songs" for chorus and four hand piano. (1 hr.)
The Buzz:
WHAT IS IT? This respected Piccolo series will feature four top-drawer out-of-town choirs, plus three leading local ensembles, strutting their vocal stuff in turn at St. Philip’s Church.
WHY SEE IT? Piccolo planners choose their choirs carefully, knowing what it takes to please Chucktown’s picky choral fans. Most of the visiting choirs — like the Antioch Chamber Choir and the Southern Appalachian Chamber Singers — have wowed Piccolo crowds in past festivals. And both of Robert Taylor’s participating choirs, the College of Charleston Concert Choir and the Taylor Festival Choir, were honored at prestigious national choral conventions just this year. If you can’t get into the Cathedral to hear the big festival’s Westminster Choir, these events will provide ample consolation.
WHO SHOULD GO? Thanks to our rich local choral tradition, Charleston positively crawls with choral fans who will revel in these concerts. Those new to classical choral music will get a great introduction to the choral arts. (Lindsay Koob)
