Get in on some hammer and stone-heaving at the Scottish Society of Charleston’s Scottish Games and Highland Gathering. Where else can you see tartan-clad professional and amateur athletes hurl large, heavy objects you were told never to throw? Though the festival runs all weekend, the bulk of the activities will take place Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing all day with clan expos, sports events, and other cultural demonstrations — the party won’t stop until 10 that night. Don’t miss the exhibition of physical prowess at the Scottish Heavy Athletics, with events including the Sheaf Toss and the Caber Toss. Afterward, join the kiltsmen as they show off their gracefully light feet by partaking in the ancient Highland Dance, accompanied by traditional piping and drumming. A separate ticket will grant you entry to the beer dinner, featuring Asheville’s Highland Brews matched with three courses of age-old Scottish fare like haggis and cockaleekie soup of barley. All ages can join the dinner table, but here Scottish tradition bows to modernity: only those of age are permitted to drink. So buckle up those brogues and skip on over to Boone Hall Plantation for the only time this fall you can pull off argyle with plaid. Tickets are available online or by cash only at Sticky Fingers in Mt. P, downtown, and Summerville.
