Charleston RiverDogs vs. Savannah Sand Gnats
Thu., June 5, 7:05 p.m., Fri., June 6, 7:05 p.m., Sat., June 7, 6:05 p.m. and Sun., June 8, 5:05 p.m. 2014
We once heard an old wives’ tale that mosquitoes, gnats, and no-see-ums will flock to the highest part of your body. We spent far too many summers running around with our fists in the air while the damn gnats feasted on our legs. The one lesson we learned: those pesky bugs are devils. And we have a feeling the RiverDogs concur. The ballers take on the Savannah Sand Gnats in a four-day home stretch starting Thurs. June 5. In true RiverDogs-style, they’ve planned a promotion for each game. Thirsty Thursday kicks off in usual fashion with $1 drafts, a wing-eating contest hosted by Wild Wing Café, and beats from DJ Natty Heavy. As for Friday, be prepared to summon your inner nerd this weekend for Star Wars Night. The event will feature Star Wars-themed music, movie clips, and games. “Darth Vader will be there, a few storm troopers, a couple of bounty hunters, and some Jedi,” says RiverDogs promotions director Joey Cain. And any baseball fan who comes to the box-office garbed in red will have the option of one dollar off their ticket or to donate that dollar to Canines for Veterans. Saturday marks the beginning of Larry Doby Heritage Weekend, a two-day celebration spanning June 7-8 dedicated to the end of baseball’s color barrier. The RiverDogs will be celebrating with a Jackie Robinson jersey giveaway on Saturday for the first 1,000 people to enter the gates and a pre-game ceremony, as well as the regular post-game run around the bases for the pint-sized ball fans.
