Even though Galen Hudson owns a record store, there’s specific vinyl he’s looking out for at the second Charleston Record Expo, like records by Professor Longhair and Steve Winwood and some out-there jazz by Yusef Lateef and Pharaoh Sanders. He might be in luck, because the expo has certainly grown from its first round. “We knew after the first one that interest among record vendors was going to increase, and in fact record sellers from all over the Eastern U.S. took note of the success of our March event, thanks to the word of mouth of the vendors who did participate,” Hudson says. “Our goal this time was to maximize the number of actual vinyl sellers (last time we had posters, comics, etc.), because we suspected it would sell out, and it did. So we have a lot more vinyl and more vinyl sellers this time around.” Expect a wide range of vendors, including nearly everyone from the last expo plus some new ones, like a guy from Pensacola, Fla. who specializes in music by dead people (and sells some of their cardboard stand-ups). But that won’t be all that’s happening, which is good if you’re dragging along an uninterested guest. Hello My Name is ... BBQ will be on site, there will be a Denon turntable giveaway, and a live show with Joel Hamilton, the Explorers Club, the Shaniqua Brown, and Subterranean Bleu Minds will follow the expo. Hudson hopes the event will continue to grow organically, and maybe even one day compete with the major ones around the country. “It’s pretty exciting if you’re a record collector, but you don’t have to be a hardcore collector to appreciate it,” Hudson says. “If you’re just a casual vinyl buyer or just getting started in it, this is the perfect venue to check out, pick up a few choice items, stock up on your collection, and just feel the vibe. It’s really so much fun. I got so energized after the last one.”
