Laugh your butt off for cheap at Theatre 99

From our 2016 College Student Guide.

Picture it: you're pretending to complete your biology lab when your gorgeous lab partner catches you staring. Well, now you have to say something. "Do you want to hang out sometime?" you mumble. They respond in the affirmative, and then ask, "What should we do?"

We're here to help with that last part and make you look super cool in front of your crush. Here are some great options for downtown date spots that won't break the bank.

Waterfront Park swings
1 Vendue Range. Downtown

It's somewhat of a cliche in Charleston that couples are constantly swaying back and forth on the swings at Waterfront Park, but somehow the activity hasn't lost its charm. Grab a frozen treat from an Italian ice cart or Belgian Gelato right down the street and head to the swings to enjoy the view of the water. The swings are popular when it's nice outside so you might have to fight for one, but hey, that adds an extra exciting dimension to the date.

Laugh for a Lincoln
Theatre 99
280 Meeting St. Downtown
(843) 853-6687

The name of this weekly comedy show is no misnomer — you really can get your guffaws for five bucks at Theatre 99 every Wednesday. Each hump day at 8 p.m. three imrov acts take the stage. And hey, if you find yourself wishing you were spitting jokes, too, then you've come to the right place. Theatre 99 offers improv classes, with students who have completed the three levels of class invited to audition for the company.

And be on the lookout for the 2017 Charleston Comedy Festival, hosted by City Paper and held at Theatre 99, this coming Jan. 19-22.

Picnic in Marion Square
Calhoun and King Streets. Downtown

Where you choose to get the food is up to you, but a picnic in Marion Square is always a great date spot. You could go with an ultra-cheap option like a to-go box of food from one of the dining halls, you could whip up your own sandwiches and snacks, or you could grab some takeout from one of the many nearby restaurants on King Street. Bring a blanket and your charm and you're all set.

Persimmon Cafe Date Night
226 Calhoun St. Downtown
(843) 937-5399

Persimmon Cafe hosts a date night on the third Thursday of every month, where a couple can drop $20 and receive two sandwiches, two sides, two drinks, and one frozen custard to split, from 4-9 p.m. And did we mention the cafe is located in a laundromat? Yep, that's right. You can do your laundry while sharing custard with a cutie, which is a multi-tasking dream date if there ever was one.

First Friday Art Walks
Broad Street. Downtown

There's no better way to show your crush that you've got class than by heading to a monthly art walk downtown. The first Friday of every month, art galleries on Broad and surrounding streets open their doors until 8 p.m., giving you the chance to peruse late-night art and snag some free snacks, too. You can always Netflix and chill, why not art gallery and stroll?
