Charleston Dance Festival is throwing down the gauntlet — a hip-hop gauntlet, that is. Now in its second year, the event is back with new performances and classes, but the one we’re most excited for has to be Battle 2.0, a You Got Served or Step Up-type competition where different dancers — or crews — vie for a cash prize. Think you have what it takes? The battle is still registering participants. Throughout the weekend, there’ll be different performances and classes, including Shen Wei Dance Arts, a riveting company that wowed us a few years ago at Spoleto, and popular music video dancer Sean Bankhead. The performances start Dec. 12 with “Find the Moment,” a multimedia/multivisual show at Redux. The culmination of the Dance Festival is on Saturday with the Performance Showcase. Professional companies from the surrounding states will be inspiring those that have been taking classes all week and making the rest of us jealous. “Last year we didn’t know what to expect but we ended up having great demand,” says Dancefx co-founder Jenny Broe. And this year, “With the masterclasses and three days of shows, we have something for everyone,” she adds.
