Hampton Park may be home to slack rope daredevils, bike riders, and dogs today, but it used to be all about the horses. Seriously, the first track in Charleston was located around it, but because of the Civil War, horse racing fizzled out. Over the last 30 years, horse racing has been making a comeback. Case in point? This Sunday’s Charleston Cup, the 20th running of the steeplechase directed by Karl McMillan. McMillan says, “This is a big year, so we’re really highlighting the races since they’re a huge part of the Cup. We project that there will be 15 to 16,000 people here this year.” Head out to the paddock call at noon, and tailgate in the classiest way as you check out the fashion scene. Blue jeans to preppy dresses will take over the race, but — come on — it’s really all about the hats. There’s even a contest for it.
