Break out the b-balls: Stellar early season NCAA basketball action will make its way to Charleston during DIRECTV’s Charleston Classic. The tournament will host eight NCAA teams, including LSU, Georgia Tech, and last year’s March Madness Cinderella story, Virginia Commonwealth University. The three-day, ESPN-operated event guarantees that each team plays three games, with the ultimate winner ending up 3-0, the loser being 0-3, and everyone else somewhere in between. Without a single South Carolina university participating, Dan Shoemaker, vice president of collegiate development for ESPN Regional TV, cited a few reasons when asked, “Why Charleston?” “When we’re looking at locations for our events,” Shoemaker says, “we typically try to put them in places people really enjoy going to.” In addition to being a great destination city, the College of Charleston’s new facilities, according to Shoemaker, are excellent for this type of occasion. With the support of Bobby Cremins — head basketball coach for the Cougars — and the college itself, Shoemaker anticipates an exciting tournament.
