Been wanting to drink Coast beer at home, but can't because of S.C.'s ridiculously outdated laws governing beer (i.e. they can't sell direct to the consumer)? Now, you can get a 64 oz. glass growler filled up at the newly opened Charleston Beer Exchange (14 Exchange St. 843-577-5446). Owner Rich Carley says they fill their own growlers from Coast kegs on the premises, charging $11 for the Kölsch, and $12 for the ESB (the current seasonal) and the Hop Art Ale. There's a one-time charge of $5 for the actual glass (amber glass) growler jug — and you can bring them back for refills. Jaime and David Merritt over at Coast have a few words of wisdom: "Remember a few things, though, our beer is unpasteurized, usually unfiltered, and a growler fill is fresh, but it isn't a bottle. It should be kept refrigerated, we recommend you drink it within three days and once opened drink up!" —Stephanie Barna


Bartender Malachi Topping of the Thoroughbred Club at Charleston Place has made it to the top three in a national cocktail competition put on by Travel + Leisure and sponsored by Grand Marnier and American Express. His drink, the Grand Pomme cocktail, mixes up Grand Marnier, calvados, Charleston Sercial madeira, apple pulp, lemon juice, bitters, and simple syrup. A panel of pros selected the final three recipes from 10 finalists. On Dec. 15, Malachi will head to Beverly Hills to compete against two bartenders from Las Vegas. In the meantime, you can get over to the Thoroughbred Club and try it for yourself. —Stephanie Barna


Combining a restaurant, bar, and museum in an old warehouse might sound a bit ... dusty, but really it's a natural choice for a restaurant in the Holy City. The Buccaneer opens Monday, Dec. 1 at 5 Faber St. downtown, and it houses one of the nation's largest collections of authentic artifacts from the Golden Age of Piracy, according to the website ( The locally-owned restaurant is operated by the same folks who run McCrady's and Queen Anne's Revenge, and they make it a point to use sustainable ingredients. Jeffery Palsa is the GM, and native Charlestonian Zack Willard will be manning the kitchen, offering an "American bistro-meets-Lowcountry menu." Craving something delicioso? Check out Taco Spot located at 1301-B Ashley River Road in West Ashley. The joint has got it all, like tacos, quesadillas, burritos, wraps, and salads — all under $7. Owned by Jason Vaughn, former chef at La Cocina, Taco Spot's hours of operation are Mon.-Sat., from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Currently they're only able to provide for call-in and pick-up orders. However, in roughly two weeks, they will be fully accommodating in-house orders. —Mark Glenn


Farringdon Bistropub will be opening soon in downtown Summerville. Modeled after a British gastropub, the restaurant's aim is to provide the residents of Summerville with a new type of eatery that serves fresh, upscale pub food — plus an extensive, seasonal beer list. While fish and chips and hamburgers remain a staple, the menu puts a unique spin on typical pub food, from their North Carolina pecans with sea salt and rosemary to a hamburger with house-made ketchup and Stilton cheese. Chris MacGillivray is the chef. They're looking to pretty up the walls with pieces from local artists, so call them if you have works to submit.
