In honor of the birth of royal baby George, we’re calling soccer “football” this week. Charleston’s minor league football team, the Battery, faces off against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday. It’s the second-to-last home match of the season, but since the last game is on a Thursday night, the Battery’s going all out with the celebrations this weekend. The first 500 kids through the gates will get a mini soccer ball — we mean football — with the Charleston Battery logo on it, courtesy of their sponsor, Piggly Wiggly. Afterwards, hang around for fireworks in honor of the 2013 season. Whitney Woods of the Battery thinks this game is going to be worth watching. “We did really well in the beginning, then hit a lull in the month of June, but we’re getting back to our winning ways,” she says. Their upward climb in the rankings is getting our favorite football team right back where they belong — at number one.
