Oh, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe, and Alex Morgan. How you left me wanting. Wanting one more save. Wanting one more win. Wanting a date. But mostly, just wanting more soccer. Thankfully, the Charleston Battery comes to the rescue as they host storied English team Portsmouth Pompey. After playing seven straight years in arguably the world’s top soccer league, the English Premier League, Portsmouth F.C. now plays in the second division, the Football League Championship. The Blue Army, as they are affectionately known in England, will still bring world-class talent to Blackbaud Stadium. Although not as aesthetically pleasing as Hope and Morgan, South African national team captain Aaron Mokoena and former Arsenal and Inter Milan forward Nwankwo Kanu will both provide footballing class for the 2008 FA Cup champions. The Battery, led by leading scorer Dane Kelly, won’t be intimidated, as they have hosted English Premier League sides Bolton and Sunderland in the past decade. Currently sitting third in the league table, the Battery should be fit and focused for this exhibition match.
