Cato Center Grand Opening

When: Sat., Jan. 9, 1-4 p.m. 2010
Phone: (843) 953-8228

Standing high and shiny on Calhoun Street, the brand-new Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts represents a big step forward for the College of Charleston and for the city as a whole. Curious visitors have been welcomed into the building’s first floor since October, when the Aldwyth exhibit opened in the new Halsey space. On Saturday, the community is invited to explore all five floors of the $27.2 million, 70,000-square-foot building, including the departments of music and theater, painting studios, and a photography suite. While guests mosey around the building, they’ll be treated to mini-performances of music, theater, dance, and other events. The opening coincides with the final day of the Aldwyth exhibit, and the artist will give a free lecture in the adjacent Simons Center Recital Hall at 2 p.m. —Erica Jackson
