Local songwriter Mike Thompson’s folksy Americana-rock may have tended to meander into different genres a few years ago, but his new solo album Falling Out of Love is pure country, no foolin’. Known in the scene as a sturdy and amiable singer and rhythm guitarist, Thompson won several Best Male Vocalist readers’ pick awards from the City Paper a few years back. His country/rock quartet Sin County jammed on familiar honky-tonkers and country classics, winning Best House Band in 2007. After a lengthy stint in Nashville, Thompson hit the clubs last year with a solid new set of traditional country tunes — many of which were more personal and emotional than anything he’s written previously. Recorded with producers Carroll Brown and Jay Miley guiding the way, Falling Out of Love is a confident, assured statement of purpose with a full-band sound. Thompson celebrates the release of his new disc on Sunday with an early-evening set at Buddy Roe’s Shrimp Shack in Mt. Pleasant. Carroll Brown shares the bill. —T. Ballard Lesemann
