Normally the closest we can get to Major League Soccer teams is tuning in to ESPN, but that all changes when the Carolina Challenge Cup rolls into town. This year’s tournament features some of the best Major League teams in the country, like the Houston Dynamo, the Chicago Fire, and the Vancouver Whitecaps. They’re joined by the Charleston Battery, which is hosting the tournament. “These are teams you usually have to watch television to see,” says Andrew Bell, president of the Charleston Battery. “It’s a chance for us to have a look at some of the very best players in the United States right here in our backyard.” This tournament always brings a high level of play to Charleston, and this year is no different — when the U.S. National team recently announced the squad for the World Cup qualifier, it included two players who will be here for the Cup, Chicago’s goalkeeper Sean Johnson and Houston’s midfielder Brad Davis.
