The Charleston Battery is kicking off their 2012 USL Pro season with the Carolina Challenge Cup at Blackbaud Stadium Feb. 25 through March 3. With three competitive matches against Major League Soccer opponents Columbus Crew, D.C. United, and the Chicago Fire, the Battery hope to use the tournament to look at some different players and to assess the strength of their roster. “Obviously we would love to win the tournament, but that is always going to be a tough proposition considering the quality of the opposition,” Battery President Andrew Bell says. Since 2004, the four-team round robin competition is hosted annually by the Battery before their regular season games begin in April. Coming in second to D.C. United in 2011’s tournament, the Charleston team is hoping for victory as they attempt to keep the Screaming Eagles from making this year a hat trick with three straight victories.
