Business closings: Daily Dose, Samos Taverna, Teavana

Three locals lost

They come in threes, don't they? This week, we got news of three business closings.

On Monday morning, Mama D (a.k.a. Duffy Ingle) sent us a sad note, informing us that she would be closing the Daily Dose, the funky James Island sandwich shop, after this weekend. "I will know more details later about relocating and exact dates," she said. "Just wanted to let you guys know."

We've been cheering on Mama D (and eating her good mood food) since her days on Cannon Street more than a decade ago. We've got faith she'll resurface soon at a new location. She promises that she's working out details on a move. If you want a last bite, they're hosting a final Halloween party on Saturday night from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Stop by and pay your respects.

This is also the last weekend for Samos Taverna. According to their Facebook page, they will be closing their doors for good on Oct. 30.

On Oct. 25 they posted this: "Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last two years. Samos will be closing after the 30th of October. One week left to get your Greek fix! Come in and see us one last time!"

We weren't able to get anybody on the phone at the Mt. Pleasant Greek restaurant, but we're pained to hear they're closing. Charleston needs its ethnic flavors!

We did speak to Tripp Alvoid at Teavana on King Street and confirmed that after five years in business, he's selling his building and closing up shop.

"2009 was a really poor year for me," he says. "We're 13 percent up from last year, but it's just not enough to compensate for past losses. We got a buyer for the building."

They are currently offering 30 percent off merchandise and have plans to close Nov. 5.

"A lot of people have asked about closing, but we've never really seen these people before. Where was the love? King Street is very tough, and now we're trading up for three yogurt stores in stone's throw distance."

Are we getting what we deserve Charleston? A bunch of frozen yogurt chains?
