Is it hot in here, or is it just me? If you’re one of the firefighters featured in BURN, an independent documentary produced by Denis Leary, it is. The documentary follows Detroit Engine Company 50, one of the busiest firehouses in America, and brings the heat to Charleston for a limited two-night run. The shrinking population of Detroit, down from one million to 700,000, provides arsonists with a playground of vacant buildings, and it’s Detroit Engine Company 50’s job to combat the fires that arsonists set around the once-thriving Motor City. The subjects of the documentary discuss how “some buildings are designed to kill firefighters” and one fireman even compares the devastation to “New Orleans without the hurricane.” The documentary hopes to raise awareness of the budget cuts that firehouses are facing nationwide. And since there’s no doubt that Charleston knows firsthand the danger and bravery associated with being a firefighter, it’s all the more reason to support other firefighters across the country.
