Charleston Ballet Theatre, South Carolina’s world class professional dance company, presents the perfect lunchtime diversion with their Brown Bag and Ballet Series. The ballet changes daily with many new and exciting additions this season. Bring your lunch and enjoy a wonderful hour of world class dance. (1 hour)
WHAT IS IT? The Charleston Ballet Theatre combines two crowd-pleasing ballets from its current repertoire each midday, and encourages you to bring your own lunch to nosh on during the hour-long performance.
WHY SEE IT? Last year’s Brown Bag was deemed a hit by Dottie Ashley, the P&C’s former arts writer, and this year looks just as promising, particularly the reviving of CBT’s Afternoon with the Fawn, a “young, modern” take on the love affairs of Marilyn Monroe. The mixed bag will patch together several more of the season’s best pieces: “Souvenance Ballet,” “Nine Lives,” “Tango Exposed,” and more. Yes, the tickets are steep. But think about it: It goes to keeping these beautiful dancers going. Need more? See the show.
WHO SHOULD GO? It’s not every day a ballet company encourages audiences to bring a Juanita Greenberg’s to-go bag into the house. But Kyle Barnette, CBT’s administrative director, is hopeful the surrounding Upper King Street district will benefit with a little lunch-boom before this low-key ballet. “We aren’t stuffy,” Barnette says, who coins the event a “B.Y.O.L.” (Bring Your Own Lunch). That’s alluring for even those with the faintest of ballet hearts. (Gervase Caycedo)
