It’s not often that local audiences get to catch a pop/rock concert from a Kiwi. This Monday provides a fun opportunity. New Zealand-based vocalist and songwriter Brooke Fraser grew up in the country’s capital city of Wellington. She started taking piano lessons at seven. By the time she was 12, she was writing original tunes and digging deeply into the folk, blues, and rock of the 1970s. In 2002, then-18-year-old Fraser signed a deal with Sony Music and moved to Auckland, where she performed at local venues and recorded her debut album, What to Do With Daylight. In 2003, it debuted at No. 1 in New Zealand. Fraser is currently headlining a world tour behind her third album, Flags. Her toe-tapping, sun-shiny first single, “Something in the Water,” is a hit on radio around the globe. Look for an exclusive interview in the City Paper’s Music+Clubs section online this week.
