Police still have not found the body of the woman who jumped off of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge on Dec. 9, but they have identified the woman as a Medical University of South Carolina student.
Charleston Police Department confirmed today that the woman was 25-year-old Tosin Oyelowo, who had been reported missing when she did not show up for work at MUSC on Dec. 12. According to a report from the Daily Times of Nigeria, Oyelowo came from Lagos, a city of 8 million people on the coast of the West African country. Her family moved to Raleigh, N.C., and she went on to study at the University of Charleston (West Virginia) School of Pharmacy. At the time of her death, she was a first-year pharmacy resident at MUSC.
Charleston and Mt. Pleasant police originally declined to identify the jumper as Oyelowo until the body was recovered, but today, Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said eyewitnesses at the scene had confirmed Oyelowo's identity. According to an incident report, police found Oyelowo's car parked at the Shell gas station on the Mt. Pleasant side of the bridge. Her purse and keys were found at the top of the bridge near where she had been seen around 3:40 p.m.
Francis says police are still looking for the body with the help of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, and Charleston County Rescue Squad.
