One of the best parts about downtown Charleston, something that they don’t tell you in the visitor guides, is that the heart of the city often smells like barbecue. Whether it’s coming from Jim ’N Nicks or Sticky Fingers or wherever, a smoky, saucy scent wafts through the breeze. And all you suburbanites are missing out. But for one day, Mt. Pleasanters will hopefully experience it too when Boone Hall hosts their annual BBQ and Bluegrass Festival, sponsored by Piggly Wiggly. You can spend your Labor Day weekend listening to the tunes of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Rodney Dillard and the Dillard Band and eating some excellent ’cue. Learn to cook your own perfect barbecue at home at a demonstration featuring Blackjack BBQ’s Jimmy Hagood. If you think you’ve got the kind of skills to rival Steven Raichlen and his Barbecue Bible, enter the barbecue competition. There’ll also be a mechanical bull riding contest, a local celebrity charity dunking booth, a fireworks show, and more family friendly fun. Bring napkins. —Susan Cohen
