As an 18-year-old in 1965, John Reynolds took the courageous and potentially deadly step of volunteering to help register black voters in his hometown of Troy, Ala. A few months after that, he was interviewed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and from then on Reynolds was immersed in the danger and triumph of the Civil Rights Movement. This memoir tells the story of that time from a deeply personal perspective. “I think what struck me most about this book was how deep it dove into aspects of the Civil Rights Movement that don’t get much coverage. We all know about Dr. King and the work of the Freedom workers, but this book really brought home the complexity and immensity of the Movement,” says editor Ellie Maas Davis. “[Reynolds’] first-person experiences were simply amazing to read.” Don’t miss the Rev. Reynolds as he takes the struggle for Civil Rights out of the history books and into the trenches.
